Purpose and goals
Each year, Rotary Youth Exchange provides
thousands of young people with the opportunity to experience the cultures,
problems and accomplishments of people in other countries. Through this
Rotary program, students are given the opportunity to grow as individuals
while their concept of the world is growing too. Participants return with a
broader view of the world and a deeper understanding of themselves.
As these young people become adults, many assume
leadership roles in their communities and bring to these positions the
benefits of their exchange experiences. As a result, Rotary's Youth Exchange
program becomes a powerful force in the promotion of world understanding and
peace.
Through Youth Exchange, Rotarians seek to provide
the best possible environment for the participant. The program enjoys the
advantages of more than thirty years of experience and a network of more
than 1.3 million Rotarians around the world. This experience arid support
system ensure the best possible exchange for participants in the program.
Types of programs
There are two types of exchanges:
- Full Year Exchange: These
usually lasts approximately 10 months in the academic year in the host country, during
which the student lives with more than one family and
attends school. Our club usually sponsors a student to leave
mid August and return late June or early July the
following year. Recruitment and interviews would start in early
September the year prior to the exchange. For further
information review the
District 5020 Youth
exchange site or contact
Comox Rotary's Youth
Exchange Officer.
-
Short-term Exchange: These
typically are summer exchanges lasting 3-4 weeks in both
countries. The exchange is organized as a family to family
experience. Rotary interviews and screed applicants and then
matches a local family and student with an appropriate
family and student in a foreign country. Once the match is
complete most the details are arranged directly between the
families. We generally take applications to Nov. 30th each
year for exchanges the following summer. For further
