The Comox Rotary Club has
partnered with the Rotary Club of Tegucigalpa
to raise funds for a village
to had running water. The pictures are not of the
village that we are
sponsoring as we have not finished raising the money.
President Kim Sleno and her
husband Rotarian Charlie Sallis went to Honduras
in June and visited this
water project.
The project that we are
working on is a village called Cerro Colorado. To date we
have raised $ 7,100.00 with
the Rotary Club of Tegucigalpa contributing $500.00
We still need $2,300.00 US.
This will qualify for an International Project as well as
in District 5020 it has a
water theme.

WATER & SANITATION PROJECTS IN HONDURAS
Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Tegucigalpa, in conjunction with the
Honduran National Water and Sewage Authority and Rural Honduran Communities.
About half of Honduras' 6 million people live in rural areas. The majority
of them lack potable water. Most residents do not use a latrine. Generally,
women carry the water by hand, frequently from distant and usually
contaminated streams; they dedicate one or more hours daily for this task.
Infant mortality is high, in excess of 80 deaths per thousand births;
diarrhea causes about 30% of infant mortality.
The community is aware of the problem and has requested help. SANAA has
identified a number of communities that can be provided gravity operated
clean running water inexpensively. The installation of rural water systems
significantly improves the well being of the community, dramatically
improves community health, and reduces infant and child mortality.
Description of the Project
The program provides an installed water tap and pit toilet for each house,
as well as education on how to operate and maintain the system and improve
community sanitation. A Rotary investment of between US$50.00 to US$100 per
resident is required to serve a typical community of about 100 to 350
people.
Project Objectives
Improve water supply and sanitation in a rural area of Honduras.
Make a real improvement in the health and well being of a village in rural
areas of Honduras.
Provide health education to effect behavior changes to improve community
health.
Provide local management structure leading to community maintenance of
system and quality control.
Assure regular follow-up by SANAA, the Honduran National Water and Sewage
Authority to verify good quality control.
Reduce infant mortality 50% (per recent data, U.S. Agency for International
Development).
Activities Planned
Provide detailed design of water delivery and treatment system, including
survey and maps.
Secure construction materials. (Note that the community provides local
materials, sand and gravel.)
Build pipeline from a mountain stream or spring to a distribution tank,
normally 1 to 5 miles long. No pump is needed, as system will operate by
gravity.
Build water treatment and distribution tank typically of 5000 gallons.
Build distribution net of pipes, typically of 1500 meters. Place water
delivery valve by each house. The net depends on needs of each community,
and typically comprises 20 to over 100 points of delivery.
Provide approximately 6 months of education to improve public health.
Provide system review every 6 months by SANAA personnel.
Provide administration of funds jointly by SANAA and Tegucigalpa Rotary
Club.
Assure community input in planning, construction, operation, and maintenance
of system.
Assure rotary identification of the project.
FUNDING
The Community provides all construction labor.
SANAA provides engineering design, construction supervision, and community
training.
Rotary provides materials as: cement, tubing, valves and fittings, and
skilled labor.

Process:
The process will be as follows: the educators of Project Alternatives &
Opportunities will obtain the results of the partials and final exams and
promotion results of all the beneficiaries of the project. Members of the
Coordinating Committee of the Rotary Club of Tegucigalpa will review the
results. They will also make periodic surprise visits to the educational
institutions of a sample of the beneficiary population.
