What a great way to spend time during the Easter weekend.
Take your children or grandchildren to this wonderful
production that is loved by people of all ages.
Many of us think that polio is a disease of the 1950s when significant events took place. In these years there were serious outbreaks of the diesease in North America that crippled young people for life and in some cases took lives.
Dr. Salk developed his injectable polio vaccine and a few years later Dr. Sabin developed the oral vacine. Despite these dvelopements, polio was still crippling great numbers of people in the world through the last half of the 20th century.
In 1979 Rotarians in the Philippines began a campain to provide free vaccinations to children in that country.
In 1985 Rotarians around the world declared their intent to eradicate the disease by 2005. in 1988 the World Health Council agreed to join the campaign and UNICEF, the WHO and the US Centre for Disease Control (CDC) along with several government became partners with Rotary International in this campaign.
In that same year 350,000 cases of polio were reported. In 2001 the number was less than 600. Great progress has been made but the campaign is only 99% complete.
It is in Africa, Asia and the Indian Subcontinent that still has the disease. This is only a plane ride away. These countries are very poor, lacking in sound infrastructure and in many cases, war torn. It is in these countries that will require the expenditure of some US$ 400 Million on top of the already US$ 1.87 Billion that has already been spent by the partners in the campaign to date.
Please, Help!
